| Long Beach breaks ground on new Harper-McCaughan Elementary Fri, 02 May 2008 07:46 CDT School and city officials are gathering under cloudy skies today to break ground on a long-awaited project in Long Beach - the rebuilding of Harper McCaughan Elementary. The school that was near the beach suffered heavy damage during Hurricane Katrina, and since the storm students have been attending class in portable trailers at Quarles Elementary. District leaders decided to relocate the school north of the beach to get it out of harm's way. The new school will be on Pineville Road. The mock hurricane, Ulysses, hit Miami as a Category 5, entered the Gulf of Mexico and then hit the Biloxi Bay as a Category 3 storm. Rupert Lacy, director of the Harrison County EMA, said emergency managers are required to participate in a hurricane exercise each year. The state Emergency Management Agency set up the exercise so officials and employees will be prepared in the event of a real storm. Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
